A couple of years ago, I was an announcer at New York’s Israel Day Parade. For those of you who don’t know, it’s just like the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, except that it’s longer, not as much fun, and without the very large balloons.
Which brings me to the point of this post:
The Honorable Anthony Weiner, Congressman from New York’s 9th District was at the parade. When it was my time to announce him, I was unsure as to how to pronounce his last name. I announced him as Congressman “WINE-er,” so as to not make the mistake of calling a member of Congress a euphemism for a part of the male anatomy. Apparently, I chose poorly. His name is pronounced “WEE-nur” and I ended up embarrassing myself as well as a member of Congress.
I’ve always felt a little bad about this, but I felt a little better after watching Wednesday night’s episode of the Daily Show. As seen in the above video, Jon Stewart, America’s most trusted newscaster, made the same mistake. I guess it happens to the best of us.
