Miracle Fruit: Synsepalum Dulcificum

Last night I tried “Synsepalum Dulcificum” also known as the “Miracle Fruit.” This berry was the subject of a New York Times article last month (see link). The host didn’t have any of the fresh berries so we had a dried pill version instead. It was amazing.

For about an hour after eating the Miracle Fruit, my taste buds registered sour flavors as sweet. I tried lots of different foods and with every bite I smiled as my previous notions of the tastes of food were challenged. It felt very much like walking into Willy Wonka’s factory and I found myself uttering that the snozberries tasted like snozberries.

By far the most memorable tasting experience was my first: I bit into a lemon and it tasted wonderfully sweet. Truly amazing.
