Jeanne-Claude (of Christo and Jeanne-Claude) died today.
Here’s the link to the NY Times article. And here’s a quote from Jeanne-Claude:
“We want to create works of art of joy and beauty, which we will build because we believe it will be beautiful. The only way to see it is to build it. Like every artist, every true artist, we create them for us.”
I’ll never forget walking through Christo and Jeanne Claude’s The Gates in Central Park in February of 2005.
Like all of their art, it was stunning and on an impossibly large scale that most of us could never dream of and bring to life. Most importantly, it was temporary. While generations will continue to view photos, paintings and videos about their art, only those who experienced it first hand will understand the true beauty and scale of their work.
