I’ve been reading a lot about food lately.
I read two books by Michael Pollan, The Omnivore’s Dilemma and In Defense of Food and one by Barbara Kinsolver, Animal, Vegetable, Miracle.
Recently, I also read an excerpt from Jonathan Safran Foer’s new book, Eating Animals in the New York Times Magazine and today’s op-ed “The Carnivore’s Dilemma” by Nicholas Hahn Niman in the New York Times.
After reading these books and articles, here are the four quotes that guide me on my path towards a (mostly) local and sustainable diet.
- Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants. (Pollan)
- Avoid processed foods and those from industrial farms; reduce food waste; and buy local and in season. (Niman)
- Don’t eat anything your great grand-mother wouldn’t recognize as food. (Pollan)
- Avoid food products containing ingredients that are a) unfamiliar, b) unpronounceable, c) more than five in number, or that include d) high-fructose corn syrup. (Pollan)
Everything else is commentary.
Are there any other quotes you’d add to this list?
